Growing Conditions
The 2014 vintage was built on a sound foundation of sub-soil moisture with good (above average) rainfall throughout the winter of 2013. The rainfall ceased almost completely from the end of November through to the end of March providing ideal growing conditions. Abundant Marri blossom leading up to, and during, harvest kept bird pressure very low, and yields were average for most varieties. In summary; 2014 was yet another excellent season, continuing the dream run of vintages we have had in Margaret River since 2007. Most of the fruit for this blend was sourced predominantly from two mature Margaret River vineyards; 60% from The Timber Creek vineyard in Wilyabrup, and 30% from the Victory Point vineyard in Treeton. Fruit from these northern Margaret River vineyards was supplemented with 10% of estate-grown fruit from our Boodjidup, and Stevens Road vineyards in the Wallcliffe subregion. The blend resulting from these various sources has come together beautifully, proving that sometimes ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’

Deep red with ruby hues.
Nose
The perfume is sophisticated and complex, exhibiting vibrant aromas of blue fruits, blackcurrant pastilles and dark plums. Subtle fragrances of potpourri, cedar and cinnamon frame the lovely plush fruits.
Palate
The full-bodied palate is generous and crammed full of dark forest fruits, mulberries and dark chocolate characters. Powerful, yet refined in structure, fleshy fruits are complimented with plenty of supple tannins; all culminating together to provide a dense, persistent berry fruit finish.

Winemaking Notes
Fruit was crushed/destemmed before small batch fermentation in a combination of static and open fermenters. Fermentation takes 7-8 days @ 24 – 26o C, during which the cap is managed using a combination of aerative pumping over as well as regular plunging by hand. The cabernet components experienced a period of extended maceration on skins for 28 days before a very gentle pressing. MLF was carried out in barrel. All of the components were matured for 12 months in French oak barriques before the blend was assembled from a selection of best barrels from each batch (50% new oak). The blend was then returned to older French oak barriques for further 2 months maturation, allowing the components to marry together prior to bottling.

On the nose, a chorus of blood plum, pomegranate concentrate, summer raspberry, cassis, black cherry, blackberries, salted licorice, eucalypt, and a fresh earthy character rise to meet you. On the palate it is elegant, structured, dense, yet typified by finesse. The acidity, oak and fruit are in perfect harmony. The French oak (50% new) is evident but judiciously contributing spice, structure and toast to the final blend. This is absolutely serious and yet already absolutely delicious - so it’s unlikely you’ll want to leave it long in the cellar. Among its many attributes are ripeness that will make the Americans jealous; structure that would make the Bordealais weep; and elegance and concentration that will make the wine drinker/collector rejoice. This is an investment wine, one that will repay many decades in the cellar – should you wish.

Deep red/purple colour, with a bouquet of reserved blackberry and nutty/cedary oak traces. It’s fresh and lively in the mouth, with bright acidity and soft tannins. The fruit is running the show. It’s berry-like and charming, and very approachable. Elegant, balanced and vibrant. Superb flavour of black fruits and violets. Give it time and it will build complexity and reward cellaring long-term.

The big dog from the Xanadu range is due into the UK in the autumn and this is no bad thing because it could do with six more months to allow it to soften further. This is not your normal Margaret River Cabernet. It turns each of its flavour components up a notch over the competition and this gives it an exuberance and depth of fruit which is truly astounding. What remains the same is the cool, long, composed finish, so while your palate is rushing to compute what on earth is going on and warning lights start flashing, the tidy tannins and welcome relief from the acidity arrives just at the right time to press your reset button for you.

There’s real power and style in this outstanding Cabernet. Glenn Goodall sources most of the fruit from Wilyabrup and Treeton. It’s highly scented but it is the palate that stamps its class. Power and structure with firmish but very fine chalky tannins, silky fine oak and superb fruit harnessed perfectly. A wine with a very long future.

A Margaret River cabernet of distinguished precision, hallmark integrity and grand, enduring stamina, this is a benchmark Xanadu that sits confidently among the great cabernets of the world. There is depth yet elegance to its blackcurrant fruit poise, lifted with fragrant violet perfume, framed eloquently in the cedar and tobacco of classy French oak. Mineral-fine tannins mark out a finish that will effortlessly see out decades of potential

A beautifully fine, tight and structured cabernet. Youthful and primary with tight fruit and reserved oak. It is great to see a youthful wine unburdened by a plush, over-sweet palate. Red fruits, crushed herbs, fine tannins and integrated acidity. Just an infant. Needs time but the future is looking bright indeed

Includes 5% each of Malbec and Petit Verdot, matured for 14 months in French barriques before the blend assembled from a best barrels selection and then returned to oak for a further 2 months. An exceedingly clever bonding of fresh and complex fruit, fresh cassis at the core, wrapped in ripe tannins, herbs and cedary French oak; the length is impeccable, as is the balance. Easy when you’re in Margaret River.

Toby B.
This wine is simply stunning. The quintessential Margaret River Cabernet, from a producer that has gone from strength to strength in the last 5-8 years. Xanadu is at the top of its game and everyone else is chasing. This wine is bold yet elegant and will develop gracefully into what will be future judged to be one of the wines of the vintage. Pushes the highly rated Moss Wood Cabernet of 2014 right to the line. Only time will tell the winner here. Buy as much as you can afford.
