Growing Conditions
A relatively mild, warm winter resulted in an early budburst to kick-start the growing season. This was followed by some relatively wild spring weather however with wet, windy conditions affecting fruit set and resulting in low yields across most varieties in the region. Beautiful, warm weather returned in summer which saw flavour ripening accelerate quickly, bringing about our earliest vintage on record. A lack of Marri blossom leading up to and during harvest meant bird pressure was extreme, with netting absolutely vital this season. After the whites were harvested we experienced a minor a rain event at the end of February and cooler conditions ensued. 100% of the fruit for this Reserve Chardonnay is from our oldest Chardonnay vineyard, the Lagan Estate. The low yielding vineyard produces bunches with characteristic ‘hen and chicken’ architecture typical of the Gin Gin clone. We encourage natural fermentation on fruit from this vineyard to further emphasize the personality of this wonderful site which is directly adjacent to the winery.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Nose
The bouquet of this elegant yet powerful Chardonnay offers pristine fruit aromas of fresh pears, grapefruit and loquats with underlying hints of oatmeal, flint and beeswax adding complexity.
Palate
The fine boned palate is medium bodied and tightly coiled, displaying citrus fruits, nashi pears and white fleshed nectarines. Precise and pure, the fruit is complimented with subtle creamy elements and a lovely zesty mineral edge. The intensity of fruit and the bracing acidity combine to provide drive to the wine, focussing it perfectly to a crisp, lingering fruit finish. An elegant Chardonnay displaying classic Margaret River intensity – the 2015 Reserve will most certainly reward with careful cellaring.

Winemaking Notes
All of the fruit was hand-picked and whole bunch pressed followed by 100% barrel fermentation in select French oak (approx. 30% new oak). Fermentation was allowed to occur naturally, with the wild yeasts responsible for the fermentation introducing more complexity and personality into the wine. Barrels were lees stirred throughout a nine-month oak maturation period, without any malolactic fermentation. Only the best barrels were selected for the final blend which was put together in November 2015.

This could easily kick it alongside Grand Cru white Burgundy: it is pristine as usual, with a salty lick through the finish. On the palate there is white peach, briny minerality, richness from the Margaret River fruit and finesse from the cooler growing conditions further south. There is searing acidity alongside a softer mealy character, both hallmarks of this wine. Characters of cashew, pistachio, white currant, hints of cassis, red apple skins, pineapple, pink grapefruit, all wrapped in fine spice, lingering length of flavour, and lovely line across the palate. This is probably one of my favourite chardonnay in Australia right now. All class.

Another outstanding chardonnay from winemaker Glenn Goodall and Xanadu. All barrel fermented with 30% new French oak. It’s allowed to ferment naturally and then the lees stirred but there is no malolactic fermentation. Remarkably complex aromas of minerals and light char with a slice of grapefruit. The palate has a savoury creaminess with a nice, tight minerally core. Keen and edgy through to a long finish. Super wine.

Light to medium, backward colour, with a similarly youthful bouquet of slivered almonds, nougat and roasted hazelnut. The wine is marvellously refined, tight and fresh on the palate, with some understatement yet no lack of intensity or concentration. Delicious array of flavours, with lemon, grapefruit and citrus as well as nutty nougat and honey. Utterly delish. The whole thing is powered along by refreshing acidity. An outstanding wine.

This vintage is infused with a spicy allure that lends another dimension to tension of grapefruit and white peach. The concentration of Margaret River chardonnay is juxtaposed with taut malic acidity and the bright, fragrant allure of exquisitely ripe fruit. High-tensile precision meets power and depth

Matured in French oak (30% new) for 9 months. Elegant, supple and spring-day fresh stone fruit, white peach, nectarine and a little Granny Smith apple, the oak subtle, the finish very long and clean.
