Growing Conditions
A relatively mild, warm winter resulted in an early budburst to kick-start the growing season. This was followed by some relatively wild spring weather however with wet, windy conditions affecting fruit set and resulting in low yields across most varieties in the region. Beautiful, warm weather returned in summer which saw flavour ripening accelerate quickly, bringing about our earliest vintage on record. A lack of Marri blossom leading up to and during harvest meant bird pressure was extreme, with netting absolutely vital this season. After the whites were harvested we experienced a minor a rain event at the end of February and cooler conditions ensued. All of the fruit for this Chardonnay is from the best 20 rows of Block 2 from our Stevens Road Vineyard, which is situated on the Boodjidup Brook about 3km from the winery. Fruit from this mature, low yielding vineyard has consistently produced some of our best Chardonnay each vintage. The pedigree of the vineyard deserves recognition in its own right, and we have continued a Single Vineyard release of the wine. Limited to only 250 dozen, the 2015 Stevens Road Chardonnay recognises the outstanding quality that this individual vineyard block can produce, and highlights the unique personality of this special site.

Tasting Notes

Colour
Pale straw
Nose
The bouquet of this elegant Chardonnay displays white peach and pear characters with underlying hints of oyster shell and beeswax adding complexity.
Palate
The palate is medium-full bodied offering white fleshed stone fruits and tangy, lemony/grapefruit flavours. A purity of fruit shines through, along with the characteristic ‘Stevens Road minerality’ revealing a lovely quartzlike element to the wine. The taut, fine boned structure is complimented by a lovely yoghurty texture derived from lees stirring, while wonderful fruit intensity and bright acidity combine to focus the wine perfectly to a crisp, lingering fruit finish.

Winemaking Notes
The Gin Gin clone Chardonnay was hand-picked and whole bunch pressed followed by 100% natural fermentation in select French oak barriques (25% new oak). Barrels were lees stirred regularly throughout a nine-month oak maturation period, without any malolactic fermentation. The best barrels were selected for the final blend, which was put together in November 2015.

There is a refined delicacy about the wines off this excellent vineyard acquired by Xanadu a few years ago. Beautifully pure expression of the variety with flinty, lightly roasted cashew influences. A gentle flick of oak adds a lift and the wild year fermentation and regular less stirring have introduced a subtle controlled texture. Class act. Best drinking Now - 2027

Pale gold. Ripe melon, tangerine, vanilla and a hint of ginger on the intensely perfumed nose; a subtle hint of leesiness emerges slowly. Juicy and tightly focused on the palate, offering Meyer lemon, honeydew and toasted brioche flavors accented by a smoky nuance. Silky and focused on the impressively long finish, which leaves zesty mineral and iodine notes behind.

Indulged Yourself. This beautiful wine is neckand-neck with the more expensive Reserve chardonnay this year, which makes it relatively good value. A fresh, youthful bouquet. Intense, refined and taut, with refreshing acidity. A striking wine. (13 per cent alcohol; screw-cap .) Ageing? Drink now to 11 years. Food idea Barbecued shellfish . Remarkably light straw colour, very backward for a wine of its age. The aroma is fresh and young, without aged development. The aromas are of subtle nut and nougat hints. This is a tight, refined, yet very intense young wine with a brilliant array of citrus and subtle oak and artifact characters. It has lots of room to develop but is very complex and impressive already. A very striking chardonnay. Perhaps just a touch higher acidity and more fruit-driven in style than the Reserve, but there's very little in it

Xanadu has mastered the elusive art of capturing concentration, tension, presence and restraint all at once, and has pulled it off in 2015 with fragrance and poise. A cut of malic acidity charges impeccably precise Margaret River chardonnay with high-tensile endurance, building with layers of intense grapefruit and white peach. The fourth in an unbroken lineage of outstanding Stevens Road Chardonnays.

There is subtlety and restraint on the nose, which is always a good sign. Looking closely, one discovers lemon zest, grapefruit and a hint of baked cream. A second sniff reveals baked apple, oatmeal and cashew. The palate is stunning, with grapefruity intensity and length. The acidity is bright yet fine, and the fruit is deliciously juicy. It is the progression of flavour that sets this wine apart from others. Super stylish and impeccably well-made

Matured for 9 months in French Oak (25% new) before a best barrels selection blended in Nov ’14. Has considerable drive and complexity; grapefruit and white peach utterly dominate the building up of the flavours on the long palate. Fruit, oak and acidity all act synergistically.

There's plenty of Steven and Stevens around the Australian wine scene. Enough to cater for all tastes in Stevens. My middle name is Stephen. We won't mention Campbells. It's fine, but has a bit of sizzle too. Unripe pineapple, ripe lime, matchstick, fennel and spiced vanilla cream. Medium bodied, zesty and bright, with flinty texture, again the lime and vanilla theme, intensity, and a very long finish. So tasty. Love this.
