Growing Conditions
The 2014 vintage was built on a sound foundation of sub-soil moisture with excellent (above average) rainfall throughout the winter of 2013. The rainfall ceased almost completely from the end of November through to the end of March providing ideal growing conditions. Abundant Marri blossom leading up to, and during, harvest kept bird pressure very low, and yields were average for most varieties (although Chardonnay less so, due to strong to stormy wind conditions experienced at flowering in Spring). In summary; 2014 was yet another excellent season, continuing the dream run of vintages we have had in Margaret River over the last eight years! 100% of the fruit for this Reserve Chardonnay is from our oldest Chardonnay vineyard, the Lagan Estate. The low yielding vineyard produces bunches with characteristic ‘hen and chicken’ architecture typical of the Gin Gin clone. We encourage natural fermentation on fruit from this vineyard to further emphasize the personality of this wonderful site which is directly adjacent to the winery..

Tasting Notes

Colour
Pale straw
Nose
The bouquet of this elegant yet powerful Chardonnay offers pristine fruit aromas of fresh pears, grapefruit and loquats with underlying hints of roasted cashew and beeswax adding complexity.
Palate
The fine boned palate is medium bodied and tightly coiled, displaying citrus fruits, nashi pears and white fleshed nectarines. Precise and pure, the fruit is complimented with subtle creamy/nougat elements and a lovely taut mineral edge. The intensity of fruit and the bracing acidity combine to provide drive to the wine, focusing it perfectly to a crisp, lingering fruit finish.

Winemaking Notes
All of the fruit was hand-picked and whole bunch pressed followed by 100% barrel fermentation in select French oak (approx. 35% new oak). Fermentation was allowed to occur naturally, with the wild yeasts responsible for the fermentation introducing more complexity and personality into the wine. Barrels were lees stirred throughout a nine-month oak maturation period, without any malolactic fermentation. Only the best barrels were selected for the final blend which was put together in November 2014.

It’s from the Lagan Estate Chardonnay block, and it’s very bloody good. There are flagship wines and there are flagship wines, and the best ones announce themselves like a shooting star right there in the glass, elaborate packaging or not. This has both (glittering quality and all the packaging trimmings) and it nails intensity, length, minerally acidity and elegance all in one straight-shooting blow. Grapefruit, peach, citrus and a smear of creamy oak. It will improve given time but it’s quite brilliant even now.

Gingin clone from the oldest estate vineyard, hand-picked. It’s possible to suggest that Xanadu has its own style of Margaret River chardonnay, as it has with cabernet. There is an extra degree of precision and length, the Yarra Valley taking the place of Great Southern for the comparison. Pink grapefruit, white peach and striking minerally acidity drive this wine at a furious pace.

This is the best barrel selection from the oldest chardonnay vineyard on the property. All natural fermentation with regular lees stirring and no malolactic fermentation. Tight and forcused with a juicy minerally palate. It’s crunchy and complex with such a precise focus through to the finish. Palate is deceptively rich and concerntrated. A wine of great sophistication.

Coming from the “Home”/Lagan block at Xanadu, planted 1979-1981 to Gin Gin, the 2014 Reserve Chardonnay reveals vibrant apricots and tropical fruit notes with hints of baking bread, marzipan and honeysuckle. Rich, medium to full-bodied and concentrated in the mouth, this is less taut than Stevens Road and more opulent perhaps, just lacking slightly in complexity comparatively.

At once pretty and fragrant with lemon blossom aromatics and at the same time beautifully poised and intense, with a core of white peach and lemon fruit and a magnificent line of pristine, tense malic acidity, this is a chardonnay of breathtaking line and length.

Light bright gold. Ripe orange, pear, melon and honey aromas are sharpened by a smoky mineral note and a hint of ginger. Gently sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering juicy citrus and orchard fruit flavors along with fennel and buttered toast flourishes. Clings with strong, spicy tenacity on the finish and leaves a suave floral note behind.
